The 14th Beijing Municipal Women's Congress wrapped up on the morning of June 20.

Wei Xiaodong, Member of the Standing Committee and Director of the Department of Organization of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), attended the closing ceremony, which was presided over by Zhang Yajun, newly-elected President of the Beijing Women's Federation (BWF).

During the two-day congress, all deputies demonstrated a strong sense of political responsibility and historical mission and a thorough commitment to Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress, and especially to his instructions for the work of Beijing and women's affairs.

The deputies studied speeches by Cai Qi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, and Huang Xiaowei, Secretary of the Leading Party Members' Groupand Vice-President and First Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), at the opening ceremony.

They also deliberated on and endorsed the work report by Cai Shumin, who was predecessor of Zhang in the BWF, on behalf of the 13th Executive Committee of the BWF, and elected members of the BWF's 14th Executive Committee.

They agreed that the congress was a meeting of great importance for outstanding women from all walks of life and ethnic groups in the capital city to celebrate the upcoming 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, hold high the banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The event motivated them to go ahead, stay focused, achieve development for all, advance with the times, and laid a solid foundation for the innovative progress of local women's cause in the new era.

Wei highlighted several points and expressed his high hopes for local women's federations and women in an address at the closing ceremony.

First, to follow the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and fulfill political duties of women's federations

Women's federations at all levels should give top priority to the political work of the CPC as General Secretary Xi noted during his inspection trip in Beijing, set thorough study and implementation of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as their primary task, and press ahead with an education campaign with the theme "staying true to our founding mission" to better understand the essence of Xi's important speeches concerning women and their work. In doing so they will gain political direction and understanding of the importance, functions, objectives and practical requirements of women's work, implement the policies and decisions of the CPC, and observe the Party's leadership in the work on women's affairs.

Second, to thoroughly implement the fundamental national policy of gender equality and further improve the environment for local women and children's development

Local women's federations should broadly publicize the basic national policy of gender equality, stress the protection of women's legal rights and interests at the source, take the implementation of the development programs for women and children as an important channel to advance women's development, ensure all targets set in the development programs for women and children are reached as scheduled, and help women and children have wide access to the fruits of reform and opening-up.

Third, to be closely involved in the reform initiative and display the charm of women

Women's federations should become main players in the promotion of great causes and in the maintenance of stability on the frontline of reform and development. They are expected to make higher contributions in serving the public and promoting urban administrations, demonstrate new styles, advance ethical building and socialist core values in households, strike a balanced development between social and family harmony, go after personal dreams, make an observation of the spirit featuring self-esteem, self-confidence, self-reliance and self-development, and achieve personal development while performing well at their workplaces.

Fourth, to strengthen personal building and write a new chapter in the development of women's affairs

Local women's federations should strengthen their political consciousness, become more advanced, better represent the people, advance the building and operation of their grassroots branches. They should protect women's legal rights and interests and build a connection with them and should constantly upgrade their officials' competence and abilities in the promotion of women's work, act for public benefit, improve the cultivation, selection, management of female cadres, and nurture a group of highly-qualified faculty members.

For her part, Zhang pledged on behalf of the newly-elected leadership of the BWF that it would better study and implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, hold correct direction for the work on women's affairs, unite and lead women to uphold the leadership of the CPC, serve the development of Beijing, mobilize women to deliver a sound performance in the new era, emphasize family's roles, family education and family traditions, head them to promote and practice socialist core values. It would strengthen connectivity with the people, fulfill the functions in representing and safeguarding women's legal rights and interests, promote gender equality and women's all-round development, convey the concern of the CPC to women, deepen reform, constantly maintain and upgrade political consciousness, become more advanced and better represent the people, and develop themselves with more energy as well as vitality.

The closing ceremony also passed a resolution on the work report of the 13th Executive Committee of the BWF.

During the conference, deputies elected members to the 14th Executive Committee of the BWF. A new leadership of the BWF with Zhang as its president was elected at the first plenary session of the 14th Executive Committee of the BWF.

Wei Jiang, Zhou Jing, Zhao Haiying, Zhao Hongwei, Yin Na, Wang Jingdong, Gao Yuan, Ma Yan, Wang Yi, and Bao Bing were elected as vice-presidents of the BWF.

In addition, 10 people were elected as members of the standing committee of the BWF.
