Beijing Women's Federation (BWF) launched a family activity at Beijing Phoenix Center on May 26, attracting over 60 parents and children's participation.
With the theme "2018 Play Together, Grow up Together — Unplug and Pingpong," the event was initiated by Wang Nan, former Olympic table tennis champion and founder of sports cultural exchange platform Pingpong Hut.
Parents were asked to hand in their cell phones and play table tennis with their children, according to the organizer.
Colorful mini-tables were provided, and fancy playing methods such as freestyle table tennis were encouraged.
Several other organizations worked together to enrich the parent-child gathering.
Phoenix Digital Technology provided a Phoenix Virtual Reality Arena and a Phoenix Future Amusement Fairyland; art teachers led children to paint with a table tennis ball; and, DeerShop Chocolate provided candy for families that completed a parent-child challenge.
At the event, organizers also established the Beijing Sports Venues Alliance Supporting Parent-Child series of activities. Initially, 10 table tennis centers will join in the activity across seven administrative districts of Beijing.
These centers will have a specific open day for families, schools and communities and open special public classes for them.
Zhu Fang, a former table tennis player, said the activity was meaningful and she hoped more parents could accompany their children to do sports and form good exercise habits from childhood.
Ma Hongping, vice president of BWF, said the activity had a good social effect last year, and that such events will be popularized in the future as a way to build better parent-child relationships.
Meanwhile, BWF launched a series of activities to welcome the upcoming International Children's Day which falls on June 1.
The activities include a folk customs exhibition; a painting event; a family fun game; and, a reading session.
BWF first launched family activities last year to call on the whole of society to participate in children's education and development, said an official.
Some 35 family-culture development projects are implemented in 2018, which will be centered on children's growth, reading, happiness, creation and exercise.
Besides, parent-child reading activities and concerts will be held, added the official.
