With lotus-scented breezes conveying purity, family teachings nourish the heart. To thoroughly implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions on fostering stronger family ties, values and traditions, and to advance the construction of a clean and honest culture in the new era, the Beijing Women’s Federation (BWF) and the Work Committee for Organs Directly Under the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee recently co-organized a themed practical activity titled “Urban Experience Route on Clean and Honest Family Traditions—Weekend Family Day.” Party members and their families visited the China Millennium Monument and the Sun Palace Family Virtue and Integrity Cultural Park, engaging in immersive cultural experiences designed to cultivate integrity and foster virtuous family traditions.

Self-cultivation, Family Management, State Governance, and Bringing Peace to All under Heaven

The wisdom of the ancients continues to shine. “Upholding integrity within the family” forms the deepest foundation for cultivating a strong sense of duty to both family and nation.

On July 5, representatives of Party member families visited the “What Makes a Family and a Nation” cultural exhibition at the China Millennium Monument. Amid the ink strokes of ancient classical texts, the margins of heartfelt family letters, and the interplay of light and shadow in historical images, they traced the enduring spiritual legacy interwoven with family traditions.

As the participants of the “Thousands of Venues, Thousands of Guides Promoting Family Traditions” initiative, young docents eloquently narrated exemplary stories drawn from the long course of Chinese history. They recounted stories such as Wang Xizhi’s reverence for duty and his belief that “accumulated virtue brings lasting blessings”; Sima Guang’s timeless admonition that “it is easy to transition from frugality to extravagance, but hard to return”; Zhuge Liang’s guiding principle that “stillness cultivates self-discipline, and frugality nourishes virtue”; and Zeng Guofan’s upright conduct as an official, along with his insight that “to uphold integrity, one must start with thrift.” These enduring teachings deeply inspired the families present.

In the exhibition hall, heartfelt family letters formed the most touching emotional bonds. One among them was the final letter written by martyr Zhao Yiman to her seven-year-old son before her execution, in which she wrote, “I do not need thousands of words to teach you—I teach you through my actions.” Equally moving was the integrity story of veteran Party member Yang Shanzhou, who remained unwaveringly honest throughout his life, famously known for “never taking even the slightest advantage of public resources.” These inspiring stories of honesty and sacrifice earned deep respect from everyone present.

In the Traditional Culture Digital Interaction Zone, children gently tapped on the screens as AI technology instantly brought to life classic paintings of plum blossoms, orchids, bamboos, and chrysanthemums—timeless symbols of purity and virtue.

Rubbing with purity, painting with integrity. During the hands-on interactive session guided by professional instructors, parents and children worked side by side. Children outlined and colored lotus flowers—a symbol of purity and honesty, while parents experienced the stone rubbing—an intangible cultural heritage technique.

The eight-character maxim “stillness cultivates self-discipline, and frugality nourishes virtue,” taken from Zhuge Liang’s Admonition to My Son, came vividly to life through the parents’ careful stone rubbings. When these calligraphy impressions were artfully combined with children’s hand-painted lotus fan patterns, a unique “Breeze of Integrity Fan” was born, embodying the spirit of honest and upright family traditions.

Family Traditions Fostering Integrity, and Integrity Strengthening Family Traditions

Accompanied by sunshine and a gentle breeze, representatives of Party member families visited the Sun Palace Family Virtue and Integrity Cultural Park on July 12. Immersed in the themed exhibition “On the Path Accompanied by Sunshine, Bathed in Honest Breezes: Good Family Traditions as the Cornerstone of Integrity,” they experienced firsthand how virtuous family traditions nourish upright Party’s conduct, government’s working style, and positive social customs.

Led by the docents, participating families strolled through the grey-brick courtyards, listening to the explanations of the historical significance of codifying family traditions into laws and regulations. They viewed vivid case studies on anti-corruption efforts and reflected on the family precepts of revolutionary pioneers. In the simplest of words, these teachings conveyed profound messages—upholding integrity, valuing honesty, cultivating oneself, and nurturing the family.

No matter the provisions of the Civil Code of the People’s Republic of China and the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Family Education Promotion, or Li Dazhao’s family instructions of “being diligent, honest, and generous to others”; no matter the heartfelt letters Yang Kaihui and Zhao Yiman wrote to their children, or Jiao Yulu’s legacy of “never accepting special privileges under any circumstances”—each exhibit offered profound insight into the principle that family traditions shape the Party’s conduct, and that only with clean families can there be clean governance.

“Self-discipline constitutes family traditions, humility and respect constitute family traditions, integrity and honesty constitute family traditions.” With resolute voices, the host and young docents recited Ode to Family Traditions, each word powerful and stirring, embedding the spirit of clean and upright family traditions deep within the hearts of all present.

On site, under the guidance of professional instructors, participants attentively learned to make fragrant sachets. “Let the fragrance stay close, and the alarm of integrity ring long.” These small sachets became heartfelt tokens exchanged among families to symbolize integrity and self-discipline.

As a key initiative in the ongoing normalization of clean governance education, this event nurtured integrity through family traditions. The abstract virtues in the wisdom of classical texts, the moral teachings of revolutionary pioneers, and the delicate craftsmanship expressed through hands-on activities were transformed into tangible, experiential, and inheritable values. Through this subtle yet profound approach, the event promoted honesty and cultivated clean and upright family traditions.

With the official launch of the “Urban Experience Route on Clean and Honest Family Traditions,” citizens can now explore six thoughtfully curated routes featuring landmarks such as the China Millennium Monument and the Sun Palace Family Virtue and Integrity Cultural Park. Through immersive cultural experiences, these routes aim to strengthen the power of family values and collectively build a new era of civilized social customs rooted in countless exemplary family traditions.
