Forum on Women’s Sci-tech Collaborative Innovation in Frontier, Interdisciplinary Areas of ZGC Forum Held in Beijing

The Forum on Young Womens Sci-tech Collaborative Innovation in Frontier and Interdisciplinary Areas, a regular activity of 2023 Zhongguancun Forum, was held in Beijing on September 2. The event was sponsored by Beijing Women's Federation (BWF) and the Working Committee for Education of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, and it was undertaken by Capital Women Professors Association (CWPA) under the guidance of the general office of Zhongguancun Forum.

The forum aimed to consolidate the achievements of the sub-forum on women in sci-tech innovation on the sidelines of the 2023 ZGC Forum, guide women sci-tech workers to devote themselves to cutting-edge sci-tech research.

The forum focused on the latest development of basic and frontier and interdisciplinary research. It invited women scientists, which included Su Donglin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wang Xiaoyun, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Dawn Stacey, an academician of the American Academy of Nursing and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, to share their sci-tech research findings and academic career. It kicked off a new round of women-oriented talents training program, and held a dialogue among women scientists and young sci-tech talents.

Tan Hong, Vice-President of the BWF, and Wang Dapin, deputy Party secretary of the Working Committee for Education of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC, attended and addressed the forum. He Haiyan, president of the CWPA, Wang Xiaohong and Huang Xiaoyu, vice-presidents of the CWPA, and Li Yanqiu, director of the CWPA Special Committee for Women Scientists, presided over separate parts of the event.

Those in attendance of the event included representatives of women scientists and students from over 80 Beijing-based institutions of higher learning and scientific research, and those from women's organizations in the capital.

In her speech, Tan conveyed great respect to outstanding women scientists and called on young women scientists to carry forward fine traditions and fulfill their obligations in the high-quality development of the capital city.

Wang Dapin said that the Working Committee for Education of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC has adopted a series of policies and measures to further bolster the country's strength in education. He urged local universities to actively participate in the overall work of the capital city and foster talents for national development and the modernization of the country.

 

Academician Su delivered a report, entitled "Fulfilling the obligations of young women in seeking self-reliance in science and technology." She underscored the commitment embodied by young scientists to the development of China's electromagnetic and aerospace technologies.

Academician Wang Xiaoyun presented a report, entitled "Cryptographic technology and high-quality development of the digital economy," during which she explained technical terms with easily understood words and reflected the courage and dedication of scientists in her research team.

Academician Dawn Stacey delivered a virtual report, in which she shared her experience in using remote cooperation agreement in effectively curbing cancer symptoms.

At the forum, organizers announced a list of supervisors and trainees of this years program to train leading young women scientists and presented certificates to them. The training program was launched by CWPA in 2022 to strengthen the cultivation of outstanding young sci-tech talents and promote their all-around development under the guidance of extraordinary scientists. Liu Yang, a professor with North China Electric Power University, and Fu Lina, a student from Beijing Forestry University, gave separate speeches on behalf of the supervisors and trainees.

During the dialogue featuring "She Power" in frontier and interdisciplinary areas, Professor Li Yanmei from Tsinghua University, Professor Xu Qi from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor Wu Yixian from Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Professor Wang Xiayan from Beijing University of Technology, and Professor Jing Liping from Beijing Jiaotong University, as well as representatives from the CWPAs training program talked about young women's leadership in science and technology and the cultivation of innovation capabilities. They also exchanged ideas with students from different countries.
