How exciting and inspiring it could be when Chinese dancers who are local residents arising from communities meet a professional dance troupe coming all the way from Egypt? The applause and cheer echoing in the performance hall of HaidianWomen and Children’s Activity Center in October might be the best answer to this question.
A cultural exchange activity named “China Meets Egypt”, which was co-held by Beijing Women's Federation and the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in China, opened in the Haidian Women and Children's Activity Center in the afternoon of October 25, 2014. This marks another cooperation between the two parties after the “Global Artists: International Families Art Week” held at 798 Art Zone in May and “Forever Smart Women: Sino-Egyptian Women’s Cultural Exchange Activity” at the Egyptian Embassy in June in the same year. The activity attracted nearly three hundred participants, including Ma Lanxia and Zhou Zhijun, Chairwoman and Vice Chairwoman of Beijing Women's Federation, Chen Shuang, Deputy Mayor of Haidian District, H. E. Mr. Magdy Mahmoud Amer, the Egyptian Ambassador, Inusah, the Nigerian Ambassador, Mrs. Karima Nasser Al-Saadi, the Chairman of the Association of Wives of Arabian Ambassadors in China and wife of the Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman, families of diplomatic envoys in China, Egyptian students studying in China and residents from Haidian District. It was covered by several media, such as CCTV International Arabic, China National Radio, Radio Beijing Corporation, China Women’s News, Women's Foreign Language Publications of China and Qianlong.com. The journalists from CCTV International Arabic carried out exclusive interviews with the Egyptian Ambassador and the representatives from Beijing Women's Federation on cultural exchanges between China and Egypt.
On the lively site of the activity, a dozen Egyptian dancers performed a traditional dance called “Sophie” which could be traced back to the 13th century. When the dancers in colorful dresses whirled to the lively rhythm and the deep voice of the singer, the audience felt like wandering at the foot of a pyramid or along the Nile. The superb skills of the Egyptian dancers won the heart of every spectator and the appreciation of friendship, enthusiasm and brightness was communicated through their dancing to the audience. Afterwards, Chinese children from Blue Sky Kindergarten responded with a mixed performance of Chinese folk dances full of childish merriness, and senior dancer groups from Ganjiakou Street of Haidian District and Haidian Women and Children’s Activity Center staged excellent Xinjiang-style and Tibetan-style dances and a show of Chinese costumes in the Tang Dynasty, displaying the diversified Chinese ethnic features, the extensive and profound Chinese culture and the positive attitude of Beijing residents towards life. At the end, both Chinese and Egyptian dancers and all the spectators from different countries joined in, dancing and singing together. The friendship and enthusiasm which cannot be limited by language gaps seemed to last forever in the swirling dresses and the hearty laughs of the participants…
H. E. Mr. Magdy Mahmoud Amer, the Egyptian Ambassador, and other guests also paid a special visit to a dozen classrooms with special functions of Haidian Women and Children’s Activity Center, and learned about various exhibitions and comprehensive services, such as the SkilfulWomen’s Works Exhibition, the Family Activity Center, psychological counseling, legal rights protection and gym room.
