Get Closer to “the Beijing Eight Palace Handicrafts”

On the afternoon of October 11, 2015, Beijing Women's International Center, Beijing Association for International Exchange of Personnel and Beijing International Chinese College jointly invited some diplomat families from embassies in China and representatives of Beijing Smart Lady to visit the First Works Exhibition Activities of “the Beijing Eight Palace Handicrafts” of Beijing Technical Schools at the Long’an Temple. The event was attended by about more than 50 people, including Vsevolod Sobko (Counselor of Ukraine Embassy in China), M.Mehdiyousefi (Counselor of Iran Embassy in China), diplomat families from the embassies and consulates in China (such as Bangladesh Embassy in China and Uruguay Embassy in China) and Beijing Smart Lady representatives.

The exhibition included 46 works by art masters and 519 excellent works by teachers and students of Beijing Technical Schools, which covered types of crafts of the “the Beijing Eight Palace Handicrafts”, such as loisonné, jade carving, ivory carving, carved lacquer, gold lacquer inlaying, filigree inlaying, palace carpet and Beijing-style embroidery, all a combination of exquisite folk arts and crafts across the whole country, and most typical of old Beijing culture. Professor Yu Ming (Director of the Jade Culture Commission of Chinese Traditional Culture Promotion Society and Deputy Director of the Chinese Jade Culture Research Center of China Central Academy of Fine Arts) held a thematic lecture for Chinese and foreign guests about China’s 5,000-year-long jade culture, which deepened people’s understanding of the cultural connation and historical details of jade carving workmanship.

The exhibition of “the Beijing Eight Palace Handicrafts” was organized by Beijing Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipal Dongcheng District, with the aim of enabling more foreign guests in Beijing to understand and perceive Chinese traditional culture, strengthening the inheritance and innovation of traditional craftsmanship and promoting the traditional culture with Beijing characteristics to go to the world by virtue of the “the Beijing Eight Palace Handicrafts”.
