Officials from Beijing Women’s Federation (BWF) received a delegation of visitors from the African Union (AU) on October 31 at Dongsi Olympic Community Sports and Culture Center in Beijing.
The delegation, headed by Dr. Khabele Matlosa, Director for Political Affairs at the African Union Commission, had attended the 2nd Consultation on Human Rights between China and AU shortly before the visit.
This visit was designed to increase understanding among the visitors about Chinese women's development.
The AU is an all-African political entity which covers politics, economics and the military, and encompasses members from 54 African countries. Its main purpose is to help develop and consolidate democracy, human rights and sustainable economies in the continent, while its ultimate goal is to establish an "African United States".
Zhao Haiying, vice-president of BWF, extended her greetings to the members of the delegation, and accompanied them on a tour.
The delegates visited and learned about development and the changes of Dongsi Olympic Community. Members visited the Rainbow Studios at the Community Sport and Culture Center. They also discussed the situation regarding female entrepreneurship with representatives of the Smart Lady project in Doncheng district.
Matlosa said the visit had left a deep impression on everyone involved, and he admired the environment and support for women’s development provided by the Chinese government. He expressed hope that the AU women organizations and BWF could build future platforms for women’s entrepreneurship, especially in the field of handicrafts training.
Liu Hua, Special Representative for Human Rights Affairs and Deputy Director of the International Department of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the officials from Beijing Women International Center, women’s federations of the city’s Dongcheng district and Dongsi Street accompanied the visitors during the gathering
