Officials from Beijing Women’s Federation (BWF) received a delegation of four female representatives from Somalia on September 22 at Dingsi Olympics Community Sports Culture Center in the Chinese capital.
The delegation, which had previously attended the 2nd China-Arab Women's Forum, was led by Batulo Gabale, president of Somali National Women's Organization.
The visit mainly focused on how China uses hand-knitting to promote female employment and entrepreneurship.
The delegation listened to an introduction at the center, and visited “Past and Present of Dongsi,” which is the community’s small exhibition showing hutong culture .
Later, the delegation visited Rainbow Studio, part of the city’s Doncheng District Development Association of the Smart Lady Studio, to investigate local women’s hand-knitting program.
Gabale said the experience of using hand-knitting to promote women's employment and entrepreneurship was useful and relevant to Somali women. Members of the delegation also tried their hands with Chinese knitting at the studio.
Delegates said the visit was fruitful. They felt the positive combination of community construction and local history and culture, and understood the specific measures taken by women's federations in China to support entrepreneurship and employment.
They said they hoped to communicate further with BWF on promoting women’s employment and entrepreneurship, and especially cooperate in training sessions on hand-knitting.
Before leaving, members performed an impromptu song called “The Time We Visited China” in Somali. They expressed their appreciation for China and their aspiration to maintain a long-lasting friendship between two country’s women through song and dance.
Officials from the Liaison Department of the All-China Women’s Federation; Beijing Women International Center; the Women’s Federation of Dongcheng District; and, the Women’s Federation of Dongsi Community also accompanied the visitors during the gathering
