Officials from Beijing Women’s Federation (BWF) received a 17-person delegation of representatives from Kenya on May 15 at Beijing Women and Children’s Social Service Center.

The delegation was lead by Kenya's first lady Margaret Kenyatta, who was in Beijing to attend the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation accompanying Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Ms. Kenyatta's visit was for her to better understand the development status of women and children in China, thus promoting exchange and cooperation among women from both nations.

Ma Lanxia, president of Beijing Women’s Federation, extended her warm welcome to the first lady, and accompanied her on a tour of the center.

The African delegation visited several exhibition and activity rooms themed around services provided by the center such as rights protection, entrepreneurship, employment and family education.

Ma introduced the main public services for women and children carried out by BWF, and the specific methods used to ensure women rights protection, entrepreneurship support and other assistance.

As Margaret Kenyatta arrived at a training area, she saw women taking lessons in housekeeping, and asked about the content, arrangements and requirements of the classes. Later, she witnessed practical training on how to feed a baby and a variety of related nursing practices.

She commended the center for providing a complete range of facilities and quality lessons. She also applauded the service model provided by BWF of encouraging women back into work.

After, together with Beijing Smart Ladies, Ms. Kenyatta experienced a demonstration on making traditional Chinese handicrafts. She learned about the origins and customs of Dragon Boat Festival, whilst at the same time completing a festival sachet made with a special shape.

Madam Kenyatta said women in Kenyan are also good at crafts, and expressed her wish to strengthen communications and mutual learning in this area, to promote the empowerment of women together.

Ma introduced the federation’s strong support for handicraft development in the Beijing Smart Lady project, which promotes employment and higher earnings, and boosts cultural inheritance. She expressed her wish to further deepen understanding, mutual trust and friendly exchange between the two countries.

Zhao Lijun, vice-president of Beijing Women’s Federation, as well as the heads of Beijing Women International Center, Beijing Women and Children's Social Service Center and Beijing March-8th service center accompanied the visitors throughout the visit.
