The 12th National Women's Congress of China opened in Beijing on October 30. Beijing Women’s Federation (BWF) recently organized this year's fifth event of the series Experience Chinese Culture with Smart Lady activity at He Space Entrepreneurial Community in the city’s Dongcheng district.
The event, featuring Zhang Chunyan, a crafts expert from the Dongcheng Smart Lady Workshop Development Association, demonstrated the Chinese knots which symbolize unity and harmony. It shared stories of how women in Beijing inherit traditional culture and crafts and create beautiful lives by themselves. The program had an online audience of 200,000 at home and abroad.
Zhang explained the cultural history behind Chinese knots. The Chinese knot is a unique hand-woven handicraft that conforms to the customs and aesthetic concepts of traditional decoration. It embodies the wisdom of Chinese civilization, Zhang said.
It was originally used for sewing during the Stone Age, and then developed to be used in ceremonies in the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.).
Furthermore, it turned into a form of decorative craft in modern society. The Chinese knot symbolizes unity, happiness and safety, Zhang explained. It is warmly welcomed by Chinese and foreigners for embodying exquisite workmanship, and it reflects Chinese people’s good wishes for pursuing truth, kindness and beauty.
The 12th National Women's Congress will open a new chapter of women's development. In the new era, women's hardworking spirit and their dreams will shine together with the Chinese Dream.
The series event was jointly launched in 2016 by Beijing Women’s International Center and the International Communication Center of Guangming Online (GO). At the event, women from various sectors tell their story, through the Facebook account of GO, of promoting intangible cultural heritages and participating in the Looking for the Most Beautiful Families campaign. So far, the series have drawn six million hits from both home and abroad.
