A study camp to enhance girls' scientific and technological literacy, which is an integral part of the 2024 Beijing Action "Empowering Girls with Science and Technology," was held in the capital city from September 24 to 27.

Two such camps have been organized this year and they brought together approximately 40 girls from Hongying and Xiyuan primary schools in Haidian District, two demonstration schools for the program.

The girls attended AI (artificial intelligence) popularization classes and learned relevant technological theories in Beijing Science Center and Peking University's Laboratory of Learning Sciences. They learned about frontier technologies of the AI industry to closely appreciate the charm of innovation, conducted AI sci-tech practices, and engaged in group-based collaborations and interactions to enhance their teamwork spirit.

Teenage attendees benefited much from the fulfilling AI exploration journey.

Zang Ruoxi, from Haidian Hongying Primary School

"I feel fulfilled in the camp event that is filled with explorations and discoveries. We learned about facial recognition and automatic driving, made mini smart vehicles, completed the programming of AI-driven race cars through teamwork, and even experienced brain-machine interface technology. I am deeply impressed with the charm of technologies."

Wang Kaixin, from Haidian Hongying Primary School

"I have learned from the camp that scientific research not only involves experimental activities and acquiring knowledge but also requires courage and perseverance in the exploration of the unknown world. During the process of solving scientific and practical problems, I have acquired new mindsets in the undertaking of scientific studies from the perspectives of problem analyses, task disassembly, persistent trying and strategy adjustment, and found the sense of happiness as well as fulfillment brought by scientific research."

Gong Xinyan, from Haidian Hongying Primary School

"Both the curricular arrangements and relevant activities are colorful. We have explored the mystery of science in experimental activities, forged the spirit of teamwork and friendship, and gained a better understanding of the charm of human-machine interactions. I have not only acquired knowledge and techniques but also learned about how to embrace setbacks and challenges. Only persistent explorations and unyielding spirit will lead us to move ahead in the bumpy road of scientific research. In the future, I will study hard, remain curious about science, and keep chasing my dream."

Liu Muyue, from Haidian Xiyuan Primary School

"I have made new friends who provide me with additional confidence in the exploration of the unknown world. We have encountered various kinds of challenges and made breakthroughs together in the process of program management, leaving a deep impression on me. The special experience has further deepened my interest in programming. I hope that I will learn more about relevant knowledge in the future."

Zhou Ziyu, from Haidian Xiyuan Primary School

"I have found the charm of sci-tech innovation from the programming of race cars, experienced how to play chess with AI, learned more about the application of science and technology from an exhibition of the capital city's Central Axis, a newly-recognized UNESCO World Heritage site, and grasped a deep understanding of the importance of teamwork. The special camp is a study tour filled with explorations and creations, encouraging me to study hard, acquire scientific knowledge, and strive to be a talent."

Wang Ruoyi, from Haidian Xiyuan Primary School

"In the future, I hope that AI technologies will positively transform our world, keep us away from dangerous work, help us explore crude oil and diamond ... and make us to be smarter and stronger. I believe that AI will definitely become our friend and that we will create our own robots."

Li Qingcheng, from Haidian Xiyuan Primary School

"The special camp has led me to reflect the robust development of AI, which brings to us great convenience and surprise and makes our life full of possibilities. The tremendous achievements made by women technological workers have encouraged us to follow our dream in science and technology. In the years ahead, I hope that I will get involved in AI-related scientific research and make unique contributions to the country's sci-tech development."

Technology knows no differences between the two genders and girls can shine as well. The 2024 Beijing Action "Empowering Girls with Science and Technology" will continuously focus on the theme "Girls' 'AI' Future," organize women technological workers to visit campuses, and hold sci-tech innovation exhibition activities to guide students to learn from practices and engage in discoveries from explorations.
